In the small Native American community of Sacaton, AZ, about 40 miles Southeast of the Phoenix area, there is a rather elaborate memorial built in honor of Ire Hayes and Matthew Juan, both native Americans. Ira Hays is famous for being one of those pictured raising the American Flag over Iwo Jima in WW II. Matthew Juan is the first Arizonian to die in WW I. They have an annual parade to honor the veterans of all wars, a parade in which in a number of Chapter D riders participated this year.
Veterans, and particularly Indian veterans, come there from all over the southwest, and even some from across the nation, to participate and enjoy the festivities. (Chet)
